Taunton is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. It is the seat of Bristol County. Taunton is situated on the Taunton River which winds its way through the city on its way to Mount Hope Bay, 10 miles (16 km) to the south. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 55,874. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 48.4 square miles (125.4 km²), of which 46.4 square miles (120.1 km²) is land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²), or 3.53%, is water. It is the third-largest city by area in Massachusetts, after Boston and Barnstable.
